An Alternative Kaluza Theory Identifying 5D Momentum and Charge

چکیده

Kaluza’s 1921 theory of gravity and electromagnetism using a fifth wrapped-up spatial dimension is inspiration for many modern attempts to develop new physical theories. For a number of reasons the theory is incomplete and often considered untenable. An alternative approach is presented that more fully unifies gravity and electromagnetism. Emphasis is placed on admitting important electromagnetic fields not present in Kaluza’s original theory, and on deriving a Lorentz force law. This is done by identifying 5D momentum with charge. By doing so the usual assumption of Ricci flatness for sourceless electromagnetic fields is made obsolete and replaced by the simple and physically intuitive assumption that background 5D momentum is vanishing. An electromagnetic limit is imposed by assuming a constant scalar field.

The Nature of the Fifth Dimension in Classical Relativity

Hyperdimensional unified field theories date back to 1921, when Kaluza reported that the Einstein equations of general relativity written in five dimensions (5D) would yield both the standard four-dimensional Einstein equations as well as the Maxwell equations, thus unifying general relativity and electrodynamics. Subsequent research focused on the field equations, with little attention paid to...

In Search Of A Variant Kaluza Theory

Kaluza’s 1921 theory of gravity and electromagnetism using a fifth wrapped-up spatial dimension is at the root of many modern attempts to develop new physical theories. Lacking non-null electromagnetic fields however the theory is incomplete. Variants of the theory are explored to find ways to introduce non-null solutions by making the fifth dimension more physical, using alternative, weaker cy...

An accelerating universe in a 5D non compact and non Ricci flat Kaluza-Klein Cosmology

In the framework of noncompact Kaluza-Klein theory, we investigate a (4 + 1)dimensional universe consisting of a (4 + 1) dimensional Robertson-Walker type metric subject to a (4 + 1) dimensional energy-momentum tensor.

In classical Kaluza-Klein theory, with compactified extra dimensions and without scalar field, the rest mass as well as the electric charge of test particles are constants of motion. We show that in the case of a large extra dimension this is no longer so. We propose the Hamilton-Jacobi formalism, instead of the geodesic equation, for the study of test particles moving in a five-dimensional bac...
